An English Major in search of more than Education

“Basically we are all looking for someone who knows who we are and will break it to us gently.”

“We now know that 24 hours without sleep, or a week of sleeping four or five hours a night induces an impairment equivalent to a blood alcohol level of .1 percent. We would never say, ‘This person is a great worker! He’s drunk all the time!’ yet we continue to celebrate people who sacrifice sleep for work.”

Insights from the doctor who coaches athletes on sleep. Pair with the science of what actually happens while you sleep and how it affects your every waking hour.

More on sleep here.

Robin Thicke is unapologetic about how rapey ‘Blurred Lines’ is, meanwhile the dude who parodied it issues a public apology for one word.

And that is just one reason why I love Weird Al.

It’s great that he’s addressed this but are we really supposed to believe that NO ONE during the extremely lengthy processes of writing a song, recording it, mastering it and animating the music video wouldn’t have brought it up?

Excuse me but how the hell is spastic even remotely insulting?

So I just recently learned that in the UK calling someone spastic means the same thing as calling someone retarded, only much worse.
If it makes people in the UK feel any better, people in the US literally do not know this (like literally no one I have ever met and/or know). Here being spastic is usually meant to mean something along the lines of acting like a hyper-active child (like running around in circles yelling just because they feel like it please be quiet for just 2 minutes type of child). NOBODY here uses it as a slur.
Since Weird Al is a US musician and the US music industry is pretty non-international, yeah actually I think its entirely possible that none of the people who worked on this song actually knew that spastic was considered an awful slur in some parts of the world.
And I’m like 99.9999% sure that Weird Al is genuinely very sorry that he was accidentally offensive.

Sometimes I judge people by how much of The Princess Bride they can quote.

fun fact At my cousin’s wedding ceremony, his brother recited this to them as the best man speech and everyone started laughing and i think the bride started to cry

If this is not recited at some point during my wedding I will be greatly disappointed.

Another fun fact: growing up, me, my sisters, and my mom LOVED this movie. So when my older sister was getting married, I bet my mom $20 I could get the priest to say it. She took that bet.

Flash forward to the day of the rehearsal. I call the officiator and explain the story and ask him if he would be willing to help. He says yes. Later that day, my mom was telling my sisters soon to be mother in law about the bet (she was in the room when I arranged it) and she managed to keep a straight face when my mom finished by saying “Yeah, I don’t think there’s any chance in hell she’ll get him to do it.”

How little you know, Mother.

A few hours later we were doing the wedding rehearsal in the chapel and had just finished walking up and filing in at the front of the chapel. My dad walked my sister down the aisle, day down, and the official ran us through the next part. Then he pretended to open his book, took a deep breath, and said “MAWWAGE.”

Uproar. Pandemonium. HOWLING from everyone in the family. And it took my mother .02 seconds to whip around to me and point while I was trying not to fall over from laughing.

And I won $20! :)

This is gold

Scarlett [Johansson] is just the most amazing, sweetest girl on the planet. We’ve done several, outside of the Marvel universe, we’ve done some other films together, and I always relish my time with her because she’s always so… She’s way smarter than most people think and an incredibly talented person, and she makes me laugh so much. She’s hilarious. You know, we used to spend time together at like six in the morning because we were in the same make up trailer. It was me and her, her music, her make up people and my guy, and it was the best time of the day for me. x

It has to be something we create and purchase for.  Art by women, design by women, architecture by women, books by women, comics by women, magazines by women, and writing and art that does not support bad old stereotypes.  And not just women of your own color.  Trans women, LBQ women, WoallCs.  Experiment.  Venture.  Try.

Don’t trash talk other women; talk them up.  Support women who have been victimized.  Don’t be part of the problem.  Disagree, yes, but with respect.  If other women behave badly, walk away.
